GLÜCKAUF POTASH MINE ADVANCES WITH ESSER PIPELINE

Now 130 years old, the “Glückauf” potash mine in Sondershausen is the oldest potash mine in the world still in operation. Where potash salts were once mined, today “Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungsgesellschaft mbH” (GSES) is a state-of-the-art service provider in various areas of mining.

Backfilling is an important area of business for GSES: this involves refilling mine cavities from old mines in order to stabilize the mountain and largely secure the surface terrain from subsidence.

A 2.8 km long pipeline for underground backfilling was completed at the end of 2023. The thick-walled ESSER 160 series pipes with a nominal diameter of DN200 and a pressure rating of PN120 are connected with high-pressure couplings. The quality of the pipe components was tested and confirmed with visual and magnetic particle tests in accordance with DIN EN ISO 17638. The pressure resistance was verified by cold water pressure tests. This ensures smooth commissioning.
